At Forster Myotherapy, we have a passion for treating sports injuries. We’re always looking at new ways to help ease muscular pain and/or dysfunction. As part of our mission to provide the newest and most effective treatment modalities and tools, we will soon have Local Cryotherapy available for use within your treatment session.
What is Local Cryotherapy?
Local Cryotherapy is the application of dry, very cold vapour to specific areas of your body that require treatment. The equipment we use converts liquid nitrogen to almost -150 degrees celsius. This cloud-like vapour is safe and quite comfortable to apply to the skin, and cools the area down quicker and much effectively than with direct icing. The vapour has no moisture content, so it is safer than icing directly to the skin.
There are many applications for Local Cryotherapy as it can help treat a vast range of conditions, but as a sports injury clinic, we focus more on athletic recovery, injury prevention, inflammation reduction and performance enhancement.
Local Cryotherapy has also been used to help with disease management, autoimmune disorders, recovery from surgery, degenerative joint disease, lyme disease and fibromyalgia.
Cooling the area helps to reduce pain and inflammation, allowing for more comfortable and productive therapy, as well as accelerated post-treatment recovery.
The cooling works by reducing cell metabolism and secondary tissue damage. At the same time, it also increases blood flow, which promotes post-treatment healing and recovery.
It can also strengthen muscles and joints, which can prevent future injury.
Cryotherapy can be applied to most of the body, including:
- Muscles, tendons and ligaments: Quadriceps, hamstrings, neck, achilles, groin etc.
- Lower, middle and upper back
- Joints: Knees, ankles, shoulders, hips, elbows
- Any area affected by injury or surgery
